Cape Cod Stones Worth Noting

Angels in fullface on old grave stones, Yes! But angels in profile, seldom. Barnstable graveyards have the rare examples of the profile of angels carved in the old stones.

To those who rest from life’s fretful fevers in the old graveyards, dying was an important matter. The funeral was much more ostentatious than now among those who had the money to spend.

The old burial grounds throughout the Cape are not gloomy places. Far from it. Away from the fast traveled paths, they spread a calm complacency and cheer which one can feel but cannot describe. The sun shines on old worn stones that record the beginning and the end of those who tilled the soil, built a new land, sailed the seas and made the history of our land.

At West Barnstable, where Mad Jack Percival is resting after a trip around the world in Old Ironsides and the Battle of Trafalgar, are countless stones worth examining.
