Eastham Settled By the Pilgrims
Eastham was settled in 1644, by Pilgrims who had grown disillusioned by the agricultural prospects of the parent colony at Plymouth.
The Nauset region had long been known as a site where grain could be bought from the Indians. Therefore, it was thought the soil must be good there. On this theory seven Plymouth families picked up and made their way to the old herring brook at Billingsgate, and there broke new tracts of land.
