Cape Cod colonists suffered greatly from tooth decay. Tooth washes and powders were used as early as 1718, but the toothbrush had not yet been invented.
There were some “dental powders” available, though they were likely very uneffective at preventing tooth decay. Powders were rubbed on with a damp cloth. One powder was called “Essence of Pearl.” Another, “Dentium Conservator.”
