And Nothing Can Be Done About It
The old Cape skippers weren’t much for the sentimental side of life. They lived a hard and dangerous life and had to accustom themselves to the unpleasantries of such a mode of living.
But better to dismiss the centuries in the manner of Captain Peleg Hawes on a voyage to China. Twenty minutes before sailing time he informed his wife that she had better start crying and get it over with so he wouldn’t be holding up the vessel. She swore that it wouldn’t be so bad if he would only write. “Please write,” she begged him, “just one letter.” The captain groaned and promised he would. Eighteen months later she received the following:
Hong Kong, China May 21, 1854
Dear Arathusy:
I am here and you are there.
